Wellness Tips for Cold and Flu Season
Posted on Jan 29, 2016
The winter months are also cold and flu season, making it important for parents to reduce their children’s risk of illness. Although colds are usually mild, it's common for kids to catch several of them each year. There's also the dreaded flu which can make kids feel miserable until they recover. You can reduce your children’s chances of getting sick this winter by following these wellness tips.
- Make sure your kids wash their hands. Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of germs that cause colds and the flu. Your kids should wash their hands before and after eating and after using the bathroom. They should also wash their hands after being in places where cold and flu germs are easily spread, such as at school. If they’re already sick, they should wash their hands after they sneeze, so they won’t spread germs.
- Have them get plenty of sleep. Getting poor quality sleep or not enough sleep can lower the effectiveness of the immune system, which makes it harder to fend off cold and flu germs. Kids should be getting as much sleep as their doctor recommends for their age to ensure that their immune system is strong and healthy.

Keep your kids physically active. Your kids might not be able to run around outside as much if it’s rainy, but they can still exercise. Making sure they’re active can help lower their risk of getting sick. Monkey Joe’s indoor playground in Winter Park offers a safe and sanitary environment for kids to get some fun physical activity. Your kids can jump and play on the inflatables to burn off energy. Keep in mind that our indoor playground is kept clean and germ-free with Swisher Hygiene's SWAT germicidal shock treatment. This safe, non-toxic cleaning method kills over 99.9% of bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
