Tips for National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Posted on Sep 04, 2015

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. With 1 in 3 American kids classified as either overweight or obese, it's time to take action and learn how to give kids healthy habits in order to prevent diseases like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. The good news is that there are lots of fun, easy ways to give your family a healthier lifestyle!

Move more

Did you know that three out of 4 kids ages 5 to 10 years old don't get enough exercise each day? Kids need at least 60 minutes of daily exercise, but with today's more sedentary lifestyle and the proliferation of technology available for all ages, kids and adults alike are simply sitting around too much and moving too little. One way you can help your family be more active is to substitute parts of your routine with healthier choices. For instance, instead of taking your kids to the movies each week, come to Monkey Joe's and let them run wild on our inflatable indoor playground here in Winter Park, Florida. They can run, jump, climb, crawl, slide, and generally cut loose in a safe, kid-friendly indoor environment, no matter what the weather is like outside.

Make it fun

The best way to help your kids make a lifestyle change is to make it fun and positive. Instead of focusing on taking things away, like TV time or junk food, get the whole family on board with adding fun, healthy things to your routine, like daily family walks or letting your child pick out a new fruit or veggie to try each week.

At Monkey Joe's, we're happy to provide a place for safe, indoor active play for families in Winter Park, Florida! Remember, Happy Hearts = Active Kids!
