National Reading Month Activities to Get Kids Moving

Posted on Mar 04, 2016

Did you know that March is National Reading Month/Read Aloud Month? It's a great time to learn why reading aloud to your child for at least 15 minutes a day from birth is an important  way to help them succeed in school and in life, as well as an opportunity to have some fun!

At Monkey Joe's, we're committed to providing Winter Park, Florida families with a clean, safe place for their kids to get active, because we know that Active Kids = Happy Hearts! Read on for some ideas to help you celebrate reading while also getting your kids to move more and get that all-important 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

Start a book club

You could do this with your regular play group or start a club from scratch. Choose a book to read every month and invite the gang to get together and read the book. You could let the kids take turns choosing, or leave it to the adults. After reading together, the kids can go play and the adults can discuss the current book or decide what to read next month. Don't forget that we have group rates to make your outings even more affordable.

Let the story move you

One fun way to get kids actively engaging with a book is to emulate the characters. For instance, you could read The Tale of Peter Rabbit and then bunny hop around the house, or The Very Hungry Caterpillar and do "the worm" around the living room floor, or Where the Wild Things Are and have a "wild rumpus" dance party!
