Spend Time Reading with Your Kids

Today is the last day of National Reading Month. But with summer just around the corner, you don’t want to let reading time slide. How can you keep kids engaged in reading?

7 Reading Tips for Parents

  1. Read out loud. Every task is more fun with a buddy. By sitting down and reading with your child, you can show them that reading is fun, help them master difficult words, and spend some quality time together.
  2. Set an example. If your kids see you reading for fun, they’re more likely to follow suit!
  3. Discuss a book. Simply reading isn’t enough. Talk about each book after your child finishes reading it. This helps with memory retention, helps kids connect emotionally with the characters, and teaches critical thinking skills.
  4. Buy books on tape. Instead of charging up the iPad for your next road trip to Grandmother’s house, buy a book on tape. This is great for any child, but especially kids who have trouble reading print books.
  5. Explore genres. Does your child find school books boring? She’s not alone. Keep reading until you find a topic she’s excited to explore.
  6. Don’t get stuck on books. You can read wherever you go! Ask your child to read magazines at the dentist’s office, billboards, or even signs at Monkey Joe’s.
  7. Get creative. Does your child find reading boring? Engage his mind by writing a book instead! Ask him to share his favorite memory. Then work on writing it down together.
