Do You Know How To Keep Your Kids Safe This Halloween?

Posted on Oct 19, 2016

Halloween is SO close, and we couldn't be more excited! As parents, we have a blast watching our kids get all dressed up and ready to head out for the big night. But there's also that small sense of worry (let's face it, some of the crazies can and will come out)! We want your kids to be as safe as possible this Halloween. Here are a few of our best tips!

Dress appropriately.

Seems like a small tip, but it's a big mistake people make! Make sure that your kids are dressed in costumes and wigs that are flame resistant. Also make sure that any weapons included in the costume are made of a soft material, and that you wear incredibly comfortable shoes for a lot of walking. If you are going with face or body paint, test it out on your wrist first, to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction. Consider also adding reflective lights to the costume if it doesn't already have them, so they'll be easy to see.

Inspect the goods.

You know all those stories about kids getting poisioned from candy? Yeah, unfortunately those are actually true. When the kids get home, take a few minutes to go through their bag and pick out any candy that is open, spoiled or tampered with; it's dangerous! To prevent kids from gorging themselves on a sugar overload, try to feed them a large meal before they go out trick or treating, and ration 2-3 pieces in ziploc bags for each day throughout the week.

Just treats (no tricks).

If the group of children trick or treating is under the age of 12, adult supervision is crucial. If the group is over this age, make sure they all have cell phones, flashlights, and a route planned out before they go. Suggest a certain time frame to be home, and tell them to never enter a porch that isn't lit, and to not go inside if asked to do so. Stay on the sidewalks, and only cross at crosswalks.

Keep your porch minimal.

As far as handing out the candy, make sure you don't have any lose wires or hard obstacles for the kids to get over. We also don't recommend having candles lit (fire hazard), and it's considerate to keep any pets inside (as some kids are afraid of them).
