Health Tips for Cold Weather

Are you worried about your little ones getting sick this winter? While low temperatures, recycled air, and decreased fitness make it more likely that kids will get sick, a little prevention goes a long way. Encourage happy, healthy kids this winter with these tips for family winter wellness.

3 Healthy Winter Tips for Families

  1. Drink lots of water. Everyone knows drinking water is important. But do you know why? Staying hydrated helps fight fatigue, giving kids more energy to play. It helps with digestion and flushes toxins from the body. It can also improve moods and soothe headaches. So how much water should your kids drink? Pediatricians recommend 5 glasses a day for kids age 5-8 and 7 glasses a day for 9-12 year olds.
  2. Wash your hands. You don’t know where that handrail has been! Germs tend to collect in public places like schools, doctor’s offices, and neighborhood playgrounds. To help keep kids healthy this winter, make sure they wash their hands after playing, anytime they come home, and before eating. After all, not every place they go is kept as clean as Monkey Joe’s.
  3. Plan active play. It’s easy to sit on the couch all day when it’s cold outside, but physical activity is one of the best ways to help kids stay healthy. That doesn’t have to mean doing jumping jacks every morning. In fact, the more kids have fun, the less they’ll realize it’s good for them! Make active play a social event when you plan a playdate at Monkey Joe’s, or get the family involved with a group playday. All that monkeying around will help them stay healthy!
