Who is Alex from Alex’s Lemonade Stand?

Posted on Jun 04, 2019

Born January 18, 1996, Alexandra Scott would change the world in just a few short years.  Alex was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer just prior to her first birthday.  Her parents, Liz and Jay Scott, were told that it was unlikely she would ever walk, even if she somehow did beat her diagnosis, Neuroblastoma.

However, Alex turned out to be a persistent, resilient young girl.  A couple of weeks after the shocking birthday news, Alex started kicking her feet against all odds.  By the age of two, Alex was crawling and standing upright with the aide of leg braces.  It seemed like anything was possible – until her tumors started growing again a couple of years later.  In the interim, she had persisted and learned how to walk.

The day after her fourth birthday, Alex received a stem-cell transplant to assist her body in fighting this lifelong battle.  She had clearly told her mother that, when she was released from the hospital, she wanted to raise money for kids suffering from cancer – with a lemonade stand.  Somehow, she was recovering from a major procedure and still thinking of others.  She wanted to raise money for “her hospital” so that the doctors could “help other kids, like they helped me.”

Later in the year 2000, Alex and her older brother held a lemonade stand fundraiser that raised $2000 dollars.  This was an outstanding feat for a 4-year-old in the middle of her own battle with a debilitating cancer.  She inspired awe and raised awareness for children just like her: battling silently, most often losing in the end to a vicious childhood disease.

Alex continued to hold a yearly fundraiser of her own until she was tragically claimed by her Neuroblastoma in 2004.  The summer after she passed, she and countless others had raised over a million dollars to help research cures for childhood cancer.  On what would have been Alex’s 9th birthday, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer was founded.  They continue to this day to raise money and awareness for cancers like the one that took Alex’s life.

Every June here at Monkey Joe’s we pause to remember and celebrate the giving, resilient spirit that Alex carried so well.  Our hearts go out to all families battling severe childhood illness – you are some of the toughest parents this world will ever see.  The rest of us can show our support in a variety of ways, some of which can be accomplished right here with us in Warner Robins, Georgia.
