Signs of Heat Illness in Kids- And How to Prevent It

Posted on Jun 19, 2015

It can get pretty hot here in Orlando, especially during those long summer days. The high temperatures can be dangerous for kids, who aren't able to regulate their body temperature as effeciently as adults. But kids still need to have plenty of time for active play, so what's a parent to do?

Read on to learn the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke in kids, and learn how to keep your child safe this summer with the help of Monkey Joe's Pointe Orlando

Signs of heat exhaustion

  • Weakness
  • Excessive thirst
  • Fainting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Headache
  • Profuse sweating
  • Irritability
  • Clammy skin
  • Elevated body temperature (under 105°Fahrenheit)

Signs of heat stroke

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Hyperventilation
  • Loss of consciousness (can lead to coma)
  • Seizures
  • Body temperature elevated to 105°Fahrenheit or higher

It's important to note that with heat stroke, the skin will often be flushed, hot, and dry. The child may not be sweating but that does not mean they aren't overheated. If your child is presenting symptoms of heat exhaustion, move him or her to a cool place (indoors or in shade) immediately and have them sip water. Place them in a cool bath or if outdoors, mist with a hose. If your child is vomiting, turn them on their side to prevent choking.

If signs of heat stroke are present, call 911 immediately and follow the steps above until medical help arrives.
