5 Summer Brain Games for Kids

Read Together as a Family

Are you worried that your kids will lose their hard won math and reading skills over the summer? Studies show that brain drain is a real concern. Kids can lose up to one month of education if they disengage their brains over summer break. And those math, science, and reading skills are hard to make up when school starts again. So how can parents prevent summer learning loss? By making learning fun!

5 Fun Learning Games for Kids

  1. Road trip reading skills. This summer, you can skip endless questions of “are we there yet?” Engage your kids’ brains with fun car trip games like car bingo (using shapes, colors, and words), the license plate game (this can be played using states, state capitals, or the alphabet), and counting games. Want to promote creativity, critical thinking skills, and reading skills? Invent a story as a family, round robin style!
  2. Messy science. Teachers struggle to keep kids interested in STEM. Parents can help them out with fun, messy summer science projects like building bottle rockets, learning how to make quick sand or glow-in-the-dark water, and experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen.
  3. Go on an adventure. Get up and get moving! Discover new ways to learn by planning a summer scavenger hunt, investigating mysteries like that creaking noise in the attic, or taking the kids on a nature hike to identify the plants, animals, and insects near home.
  4. Make math matter. Can your kids calculate how much of an ingredient you’ll need at the store, how to evenly divide desert with their siblings, or how many glasses of lemonade they can buy with their allowance? Incorporate math lessons into your daily routine to keep kids minds active over the summer.
  5. Stay active. Physical activity isn’t just good for your child’s body, it also helps boost their brain-power. Visit Monkey Joe’s Lexington for unlimited playtime on wall-to-wall inflatables!
