Tips For Keeping Kids Cool This Summer!

Posted on Jun 23, 2016

We love summer for a million and one reasons, but man this Wisconsin heat is getting brutal! Especially when it comes to your children, it's important to be extra careful of sunburns, heat exhaustion and dehydration. To help you keep the kids cool this summer, here are some of our best tips for beating the heat!

  • Hydrate! There's nothing more important during the summer than drinking lots of water. For children 8 years old and under, 5 cups of water a day is the minimal amount to stay fully hydrated. We know it's a challenge to get kids to drink water at times, so make the routine more fun by adding colored ice cubes, adding fresh frozen fruit or buying a cool water bottle.
  • Avoid the midday rays. Did you know the suns rays are the hottest (and most dangerous) between the hours of 10 - 3? If the kids are going to play outdoors, advise them to play in the early morning or late evening, when the temperature is at it's coolest!
  • Wear the right clothes. Wear clothing that is both breathable and lightweight. Also wear light colors, as opposed to blacks and browns. In addition, be sure to have essentials for keeping their faces cool, like sunglasses, sunscreen and a sun hat.
  • Use spray bottles. It's good to have one or two spray bottles on hand. If you're planning on being in the heat for awhile, this will be an instant cool off!
  • Load up the fridge. Your kids will love this one! Keep some icy treats on hand, like watermelon, pineapple, ice cream and popsicles for a refresher. Here are some of our favorite kid friendly summer snacks!
