Sun Safety Tips for Your Kiddos

Posted on May 12, 2017

The summer season is almost upon us, and everyone is already gearing up for the pool days and some fun in the sun! But as we prepare for the excitment and fun that comes along with summer, it's also important that we start preparing for the increased exposure to the sun. Monkey Joe's in Kenosha, WI has these great tips to help keep your kiddos protected from sun exposure this year!

  • Properly Apply Sunscreen - When applying sunscreen it's important to apply a generous amount about 30 minutes before your child goes outdoors. Be sure to use sunscreen on any area of the body that will be exposed to the sun's rays. It can be easy to look over areas like the nose or behind the ears, but they can be affected as well. An SPF of 15 or higher is usually suggested to provide adequate protection.
  • Keep Track of Any Medications - Some medications can actually increase the skin's sensitivity to the suns rays. So, if you child is currently taking any medications, be sure to consult your doctor about its side effects on the skin.
  • Play in the Shade - UV rays are strongest between the hours of 10am and 4pm. If you child is playing outdoors during these hours be sure to properly apply sunscreen and seek shade whenever it is possible.
  • Cover Up - Whenever it is possible, try to cover up the skin with clothing to most effectively protect against ultraviolet light. Hats, long sleeves, pants and sunglasses are all great accesories to help ward off the harmful affects of the sun. It's also helpful to note that dark clothing protects better that lighter colored clothing as the brighter colors actually reflect the rays.

On those days that the summer heat is just a little too much to bear, be sure to join us in our indoor play center to cool off!
