This Summer, BOUNCE, Don’t Slide!

Kids look forward to the fun and freedom summer vacation. But did you know that over the summer, kids can lose a lot of what they learned during the school year? This is called the summer slide. Parents can play an important role in helping kids retain what they learned. Here are some of our favorite activities to keep kids learning over summer break:

  • Cooking and Baking! Helping in the kitchen is not only a great life skill, it also helps kids learn and retain things like measurements and temperatures, arithmetic like addition and multiplication for tasks like doubling recipes, and scientific concepts like mixtures and compounds. Learning a new skill helps keep the brain engaged and active. Plus, kids will love getting to try food they helped make!
  • Field Trips! Visiting local museums or historical sites can help to encourage kids to be curious and interested in history. Skip the audio tours and help kids read the informational placards out loud to encourage reading kills. Don’t forget to check for museums when you’re on vacation, too! Many museums offer discounts for students, weekday visits, and sometimes even summer break.
  • Physical Activity! Getting enough exercise leads to better brain development, lessens anxiety, and helps concentration and focus. Why not get a Frequent Jumper Card, which lets you bring your little ones to Monkey Joe’s up to 10 times for one low price?

With a little planning, summer break can be a great time for kids to explore new subjects and retain what they’ve learned over the school year. And when they’re done, bring them to Monkey Joe’s Coral Springs for a reward!
