Stick to the Fun Kind of Slide This Summer

Most kids can’t wait until the start of summer vacation. Summer means no alarms, no homework, and nothing getting in the way of playing all day. But there’s one part of summer break that’s bad news for kids: summer slide. Your kids might not worry about losing up to one month of math and reading skills over summer break, but summer slide can leave them struggling to catch up when school starts. What’s a parent to do? Stick to the fun kind of summer sliding and leave brain drain behind.

How to Stop Summer Slide

  1. Go on imaginary adventures. When your kids crack open a book, they can scale a volcano, solve a mystery, or rule a kingdom without ever leaving the room. If your kids aren’t interested in books, implement family reading time. You can also bring your children to the library and let them choose their own stories. Have younger kids? Teach toddlers reading skills to build a good foundation for future learning.
  2. Let curiosity bubble. Studies show that kids lose interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) lessons faster than any other area of study. Capture their curiosity with fun summer science projects.
  3. Make math matter. If you’re a stay-at-home parent, your kids probably trail after you at the grocery store each week. Involve them in the process! Ask them to determine how much of each ingredient you’ll need for dinner. Do you pay with cash? See if your kids can correctly calculate your change. If they want an extra treat, ask them to do the math and see if their allowance will cover it.
  4. Bounce around. Did you know that staying active boosts kids’ brain development? So there’s no reason not to bounce around the Jungle of Monkey Joe’s this summer. Each of our locations offers unlimited playtime for each admission. Go ahead and go bananas!
