Wondering how ice cream got to be such a staple of summer? Read on for some fun ice cream facts to share with your kids!
- The exact origins of ice cream are unknown, but there are a few famous "early adopters" who can be credited for the first recorded mentions of ice cream: Alexander the Great (who supposedly enjoyed eating snow and ice flavored with honey and nectar), King Solomon (according to Biblical references, he favored iced drinks during harvest time), and Roman Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar (allegedly he sent servants into the mountains for snow, which was then mixed with fruit juices for flavor).
- Ice cream wasn't available to the general public until 1660, when Café Procope (the first café in Paris) started serving a mix of frozen milk, cream, butter, and eggs.
- According to the records of a New York merchant, President George Washington spent about $200 on ice cream in the summer of 1790. Must have been a hot one!
- Ice cream was still a rare treat for the wealthy and elite up until the advent of insulated ice houses, and production later increased even more due to the development of mechanical refrigeration technology.
- On average, Americans eat 20 quarts of ice cream per person every year...About 5 gallons worth of ice cream!
