Family Resolutions for 2016: Get Active!

January isn't just the month to bust out your new calendar, it's also a great time to reflect on the past and set some goals for the new year! Making New Year's resolutions together is a good way for you and your family to make positive changes. Everyone can keep each other accountable, and it's always easier to stick to a goal when you've got a team by your side.

What will your family resolution be? There are so many possibilities, but here's one idea: Resolve to move more in 2016!

Experts say that neither adults nor children are getting enough physical activity each day, and it's easy to see why. Increasingly sedentary jobs and school environments are part of the problem, but there's also the lure of our various gadgets keeping us "plugged in" when we could be up and moving around.

So, what's the trick to helping your family move more this year? Simple: make it fun! Here are some ideas to get you started.

  • Make it a game: Have the whole family come up with ways to move more, like parking at the very back of the parking lot or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Believe us, your kids will remind you if you try to take the easy way out!
  • Take a walk: Take a family nature walk each day and let your child collect interesting stones, leaves, or other natural items along the way.
  • Choose active fun: When choosing activities for a playdate, school party, or even just a family outing, opt for physical activity.
