3 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day with Your Kids

Today is Earth Day, an annual event founded in 1970 to promote environmental protection. For parents, it's also a wonderful opportunity to teach kids about nature and conservation! If you're looking for ways to celebrate Earth Day with your kids, read on for some ideas.
Plant a tree.
Trees are an important part of the environment, providing a habitat for wildlife, shade for us to enjoy, and beautifying our landscapes. More importantly though, trees filter pollution from the air, improving air quality and human health. Trees help purify our drinking water, produce oxygen for us to breathe, and they can even save you money on your energy bill by shading your home in the summer!
Talk about all of the cool things trees do for us with your kids, and pick out a tree to plant together. Just remember to take growth into account when deciding where to plant your tree -- not too close to your house, power lines, or other obstacles.
Start recycling.
Did you know that it takes 1 million years for a glass bottle to break down in a landfill? On the other hand, manufacturing recycled glass products uses 30% less energy than creating a brand new glass item. If your family doesn't recycle, Earth Day is a good time to start. Get your kids to help you set up a recycling area in your home or garage, with bins for paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum. They can write labels or draw pictures to help the whole family remember which bin is which.
